Standard one of the Professional standards for BC Educators states “Educators Value the success of all students. Educators care for students and act in their best interests”

To engage and implement standard one it means to provide all your students with nurturing, empowering, and an effective educational experience that supports each individual’s development. Acting in the best interest of the student means making decisions and taking actions that prioritize the overall well-being, growth, and educational needs of the students This mean as an Educator it is your duty to set aside all personal biases/ preferences and put the needs and best interest of the student first.

Building a positive relationship with students is essential to help act in the students’ best interest. Educators can build and maintain positive relationships by showing genuine care, empathy, and interest in a student’s learning and well-being. Teachers should establish a safe relationship in which students feel comfortable addressing their needs and concerns. Creating a safe and inclusive learning environment ensures an area where all students can feel valued and respected.

In my practicums my goal was create a safe space and foster an environment where all students felt welcomed, safe, and able to communicate and express problems or concerns. In fostering this environment I started off every morning with a circle that allowed all students to share anything they like. This allowed me to hear each individual student every day. Allowed students to feel heard and understand that I want to hear what they have to say even if its just them telling me about their favourite games. I felt it was a great way to start both mine and the students day. It helped create a safe space where everyones voices could be heard.

When acting in the students best interest it is also beneficial to collaborate and build a positive relationship with the students support system, parents/guardians, and other people in their lives that support the student’s well-being. Maintain open lines of communication and share information to help best support the child’s holistic development.

Through consisted demonstration of support the students an educator can show that they care and prioritize the well-being off the student.Â
