Standard 9
Standard 9 states “Educator’s respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. Educators contribute towards truth, reconciliation, and healing. Educators foster a deeper understanding of ways of knowing and being, histories, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis”
Respecting and valuing the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada means recognizing the impact of colonization, residential schools, other forms of systemic discrimination on Indigenous peoples and community. Educators play a crucial role in contributing towards truth and reconciliation. Educators need to incorporate and interweave Indigenous worldviews, perspectives, and knowledge into their teaching practices. In order for Educators to respectfully and effectively interweave Indigenous content into their classrooms educators first need to foster a deeper understanding of the history, cultures, worldviews, beliefs, and practices of Indigenous peoples. Educators need to reflect on themselves and recognize their own personal biases and dismantle them to effectively works towards truth and reconciliation.
Incorporating Indigenous perspectives and knowledge into the classroom and teaching practices is one step towards healing. This includes creating a safe space and opportunity for students to learn about diverse Indigenous histories, cultures, and ways of knowing. Seeking outside help can also be a beneficial tool for educators Using resources developed by Indigenous authors and educators and inviting Elders or Indigenous guest speakers to share their experiences and knowledge is an effective tool to represent Indigenous perspectives, and culture respectfully, accurately, and authentically. Through promoting a greater understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures educators can work towards truth and reconciliation. Standard 9 is a crucial component that needs to be woven into the curriculum. Educators can facilitate open and respectful discussion about Indigenous history to help students develop a deeper understanding of the impact of colonization and other forms of systemic discrimination on Indigenous communities. By upholding to standard 9 educators can contribute towards truth and reconciliation.
