Formative assessment has been a vital part in my assessment for students learning. It has allowed be to understand and gauge the students understanding. Simply by circulating a the room and listening in of conversations I can better understand and support my students learning journey. As the kiddos engage in activities, i observe their responses to stories, participation, and their creative expressions. Informal conversations allow me a glimpse into their understanding. It’s not about strict grades or tests but rather understanding their unique strengths and areas for growth.
A time when formative assessment was my best-friend was the exploration of movement and mindfulness in a yoga lesson. I could observe their movments through the poses, their balance, coordination, and the expression on their faces. Gentle prompts and visual cues ensure that they grasp the essence of each pose, fostering a sense of body awareness. There was no yoga test to make sure each student knew how to perfectly execute the poses however, the intention of the lesson was to foster body awareness and mindfulness while engaging in physical literacy
