Story time in my kindergarten/ grade 1 class has easily become one of my favourite classroom routines. We start every morning with a story that takes us on a journey. Story time is a nice way to start the mornings that are calm and engaging. The story books we read can take us on so many adventures and worlds beyond the four walls of our classroom. Story time ignites their creativity and imaginations. Ive noticed my students creating their own illustrations, characters, and spinning their own narratives. The students are soaking up language without even knowing.
I have found fun and engaging ways to connect stories to the lessons. For November we learned all about bears, I got to read both fiction and non fiction books about bears. My students learned just as much about bears from my lessons threw the story books. The books have been an effective tule to harness their focus and undivided attention. I love the questions the students ask after story book time showing how much they are learning and developing.
Sometimes the story books are just a fun way to escape and go on an adventure or to a magical land. It has provided me with a easy way to make meaningful connections with my students.
