My first teaching practicum was in a grade 2/3 class. My practicum provided me with valuable experiences and knowledge that will aid in becoming a successful teacher in the future. Through observation and practice I have learned an abundance of valuable information that I can apply to my future classroom. Specific things I have learned in my teaching practicum include building connections, classroom management strategies, lesson planning, presenting techniques, communication skills, professionalism, and assessment.
Building connections with students is a vital component because When students feel a sense of connection and belonging in the classroom, they are more likely to be motivated to learn and to succeed. This can lead to higher levels of academic achievement and a greater sense of self-efficacy. Building connections with students is a critical component of effective teaching and has a profound impact on a student’s academic and social-emotional well-being. Classroom management techniques I learned include setting clear rules and expectations, managing disruptive behaviour, and re-focusing the intention and maintain a positive learning environment. I have learned to properly plan in prepare for lessons including a detailed lesson plan that consist of picking appropriate teaching materials, setting out clear learning objectives, and engaging with diverse ways of assessing students’ progress and learning.
I have learned different presenting strategies to gather student engagement. Strategies include using visual aids, incorporating group games and activities, and incorporating hands-on learning activities. I have learned effective communication with students, colleagues, including providing constructive feedback, answering questions, and addressing concerns. I have learned to act professionally in a school setting, including dressing professionally, maintaining punctuality ensuring supplies for lessons is prepared and ready ahead of time. I have learned assessment evaluations skills, including creating assessment templates, and grading assignments. I have interacted with both formative and summative forms of assessment, tailoring assessment to specific activities and learning outcomes.
My teaching practicum has been an amazing educational experience. I will take everything I learned and apply to future classrooms. As I continue to learn I continue to grow and develop as a teacher.
