The power of sports. A phrase often heard but what does it mean? Sports connect and inspire. Sports was a guiding principle in my journey to become a teacher. It should be something that all students have the access and opportunity to engage in. However, for some sports can be an out of reach. All children no matter where they come from should have unconditional access and opportunity to play sports. Erica Mclean shared on how she helps break these barriers to allow all students despite barriers access to sports in school. Mclean stated that we have a trauma and poverty problem. Poverty can limit children’s access to sports because many sports involve registration fees, buying new gear, transportation, etc. So how can we make sports accessible for all and not out of reach for all families? That’s the golden question. Eructation systems need to recognize these barriers children face and dismantle them. With sports comes a sense of community and family. Sports provide the opportunity to connect with others, and for some find their passion. Sports can provide an escape, an outlet many children earn for. Growing up I was in every sport I could get my hands on, I loved exploring and constantly trying new sports. Going to sport activities was my favourite part of my day and I would look forward to it every day. It provided me with the opportunity to connect to new friends, let loose and have fun. Sports played an extremely influential part in my life, and I think it is an opportunity that everyone should have.
